Stephen, That's good information on how to get by without the DC-DC converter. I wasn't aware that there was any way to do without it. It certainly isn't as convenient as just shoving in the charge paddle, but I understand the cost issue of the repair. As I understand it, the...

Congrats on the purchase! I've had my 1998 S10EV for nearly a year, and the EVil Grin is still there. I dunno if there is a FAQs. I don't think you can buy the replacement half-tonneau any more. There are many popular brands to chose from. Go for something very light-weight, b...

Hi S10-EV Folk, I just purchased an S10E, a 1998 model with factory NiMH's, originally purchased by the Los Angeles Zoo, with everything working but a little cosmetic TLC is in order. I'm delighted with the vehicle, kind of amazed that I could actually obtain one, and even mor...

Niel, sorry about your bad luck. Hopefully, the good luck is that there are zillions of Old ICE S10s in junk yards with good structural parts. Hopefully, that is all that is needed. Stephen in Oakland On Dec 16, 2007, at 12:15 PM, Niel Nielsen wrote: > We were driving back fro...

We were driving back from downtown La Grange tonight in the electric S10, on a snowy night (about 2 inches of fresh snow on the ground), and were traveling south on Brainard at about 10 miles per hour (because of the snow) through a part of Brainard that has has stop signs on...

Having done all three of these myself just a few months ago, I would say that they don't really require much expertise - but you will need a scan tool and a full set of metric tools (including at least one deep socket - I've forgotten the sizes) and some time. If you are reaso...

I have had #1 and #2 on Jeff's list happen to my S10EV (both this year). And part #3 was preemptively replaced while repairs for #2 were underway. I must start by saying that I, personally, didn't fix either of these, but I am in Oregon, so the guy that helped me is a little t...

Rather than try to trick the sensor to [indirectly?] kick in the kerosene heater, would it be possible to directly relay the kerosene heater to run? Surely some IO board somewhere takes the sensor input and determines if it should turn on the fuel-fired heater, and then throws...

I think that the comparison isn't necessarily fair because you're comparing the big module with who knows what else included. The Cobasys NiMH batts were bare cells packaged efficiently. If you compare the bare Toshiba cells to the Cobasys cells, the specific energy is not wor...

My math was off, but it still seems inferior to the NiMH: - NiMH: (12V * 85AH) / 17.5kg = 60 Wh/kg - SCiB: (24V * 4.2AH) / 2kg = 50.4 Wh/kg My general point was that I like the form factor and it would be nice to have new batteries in the truck (I assume the BCM would need ext...

Through some conversations w/ other s10ev readers, I think my math must be off, but this doesn't sound right: - NiMH: 85AH / 17.5kg = 4.86 AH/kg - SCiB: 4.2AH / 2kg = 2.1 AH/kg Do these LI batteries actually have a *worse* Specific Energy than the NiMH? Pv On Dec 12, 2007 1:40...

Niel, You can trick the sensor into a more reasonable temperature turn on, but you need to be aware of some of the S10 features. In short you can put a little additional resistance in the thermal sensor line (it is a thermistor that has higher resistance as it gets colder) by...

I don't have the data to back up my opinion, but I think full 100% charging does shorten battery life. On the Toyota Prius, the NMH batteries are cycled between 40% and I think 85% SOC. They could get the most life out of their batteries in this range. This makes sense to me....
