[S10-EV] S10-EV Digest, Vol 148, Issue 9

I bought a GM Tech 2 clone from the odb China website a few years ago. It works with all the S10e DTC reading and many measurement and variable data monitoring. Paid $300 new came with case and all cables, even can bys stuff, that ee dont need. Never tried flashing yet. For that, I bought the whole GM TIS package preinstalled on an older laptop from ebay. This was much easier than trying to instal the hack. I do need someone to help me find a copy of the EVbones hack that was used to change Battery type from NiMh <> pBa The coolant thing, I am pretty sure does not matter, I would go with the orange stuff at auto store, and get distilled water to mix from grocery store. I do remember reading back in the archives a solution for the gear oil, I'm thinking Dexron IV synthetic ATF. I download it and search for keywords in notepad. ------------------------------------------

I think that a brand new Tech2 costs $4000.  But if you wait for the right deal to come around on eBay, you can get a genuine Tech2 for a reasonable price, especially if you are willing to accept a well-used but functional one.  12 years ago, I paid $1500 for mine on eBay.  When I first got it, the device was sometimes erratic, which I traced to some broken solder joints on the input connector on the bottom end of the unit.  Re-soldering these solder joints fixed the problem and made it perfectly reliable. If you find an older Tech2 with the smaller memory module, provided that it covers at least the 1998 GM models, it will work fine on the S10EV.  My Tech2 has the smaller memory module and I can't update it to cover newer GM cars, but that's ok with me, as my only use of the tool is for my S-10EV.  The last time I looked (probably 10 years ago), the larger memory module (needed to be able to download the coverage for newer model year cars) cost $300 to $400. [S10-EV] S10-EV Digest, Vol 148, Issue 9

Ok gang coolant does matter. It must be Dexcool and will say it on the container. AutoZone or Oriellys, yes its typically orange. The conversion to NiMH from lead on the 1997s were not an easy modification. The programming of the BPCM alone was not enough to make it all work. We ended up reflashing a BPCM with a 1998 BPCM in order to accept the NiMH chemistry (you need a valid 1998 VIN for that). That allowed for the different voltage profiles during charge, operation and resting. We changed the configuration of the battery layout and made special hardware to fit the old lead cables onto the Ovonics batteries. Different hardware to mount the cables. All of this only takes Ovonics batteries into account with their charge and discharge profile. Remember if the system sees a .7 of a volt difference between the highest and lowest battery in the string a DTC will be set and you will go it 1mph creep mode or BPCM disconnect. This will happen frequently and almost immediately making it almost impossible to get the pack online. We typically spent 2 weeks profiling a battery pack before we found enough to match the charge and discharge profile. Lead had a much wider differential for voltage swings. Last problems is the gauges. That information is stored in the BCM behind the glovebox. We made a custom PIC that changed all the settings and ran new wire to the dash. We blew the security on all the PICs so you will be hard pressed to find one you can copy. It piggybacked on the BCM and ran to the dash. When we stopped I believe we gave the code and any chips to Don but I wouldn’t bother him on something that far removed. So to go to NiMH you need a converted BCM and wiring, and to trick the 97 BPCM to accept a 1998 NiMH VIN and program accordingly. And the batteries of course. To go back to the lead you simply remove the chip and reconnect the cut traces on the BCM and reprogram the BPCM to lead with correct VIN and put in lead batteries. Some wiring must also be restored in the dash around the battery gauge and idiot lights but I forget, its been over 10 years and I have slept since then. I fondly remember our only two shop “events”. When we were wiring up a pack we had a strict one hand behind the back policy. One would tend to rest a hand on the side of a pack or randomly put it somewhere dangerous. So we were both wiring up the same pack from each end and talking away. The interconnects we made had rebends we made to fit Jeff’s meticulous nature on the look and feel. Since one us was on he wrong side from normal one of us was putting the interconnects in reverse which would have been fine until we came together in the middle of the pack. He put that last interconnect down and bang! Blew half the eye off the interconnect and destroyed the lead mount point on the battery. We stopped helping each other after that standing on the same side and only one person for one pack. The second was a stray hand. Those packs had floating ground to separate them from the frame and body. Jeff put his hand down while talking one day with a pack over half wired. He completed the circuit, got hit, and did the money dance. The funniest part was he burned the back of the craftsmen ratchet impression into his palm. S-10 branded. It was nice to have hime finally match my Ford Model A coil, bumped up past 200,000v with a volkswagen condenser, turned into a jacobs ladder, fired off in the shop using a fluorescent bulb to light it from atmospheric particles, me accidentally wrapping my hand around one ends electrodes, and the jacobs ladder brach to the other end electrodes, lighting the lamp fully, and me at the same time incident of 1996. He never let me forget that one. take care
