Looks like most people have moved on from this list... I have many fond memories of acquiring, reviving and driving my truck over
the course of about 18 months. But since 2011, when I got my Volt, my S10
just sits. Ever since then, I've wondered if I'll ever drive the truck
again. I've been selling off the Ovonic NiMH batteries since I lost
confidence in ever being able to keep 26 of them balanced for any length of
time. Maybe I'll find a way to upgrade the truck before the rest of it
"goes to seed". So...is anybody still enjoying their S10? Let's hear from you if you're out
there! Best regards,
Michael Anzalone

Michael; I’m still driving mine, mostly to haul gardening stuff (soil, mulch, sand gravel, shrubs, flowers, tree limbs) or get lumber from building supply, etc. Basically I use it as the pickup truck it was designed to be. The self discharge is getting much worse, and I have more problems these days with the charge terminating right away with too much voltage change on certain weak modules if it sits too long. A few re-boots generally fixes that, and gets me over the hump. I have spare modules, so will probably swap some out before the summer’s over. Oh, the power steering went recently and the AC still leaks (slowly), so that too is on the growing list. The RAV4 has no issues, it run like a champ on the original pack and 106,000 miles.
Perhaps my S10 is the last one standing (running), I asked about 2 years ago and nobody seemed to have one operational, though I suspect Don Blazer does. You email reminds me that I need to charge it tomorrow, before I go on vacation. Hello to the survivors,
Mine has a few bad batteries. (Lead acids) and of course the computer won't let me move it.
I only got 12,500 miles from the pack of Deka 12AVR75 batteries, but believe I could get double that since I'm more aware of how to drive it now. Years ago, when I was looking into doing an EV conversion, everyone said, "Expect to burn up your 1st pack", In my case they were correct. I was so impressed with the performance and wasn't thinking of battery life.
So now mine is sitting with a few options. 1. Sell it so someone else can enjoy it. ( It's in great shape and only needs batteries.)
2. A new pack of the same batteries at $4500
3. A pack of Lithium batteries from "Smart Battery" at about $14000. Expensive but probably the last pack I'd ever buy with several advantages. Weight being the biggest difference. My lead-acids weigh 1430 lbs. A pack of Smart batteries are only 315lbs. and would easily fit in the box.
I'm retired now and need to spend a little differently and think No. 1 is my smartest option.
But I'd really like to drive it. Kevin McMullin

Hi Kevin, Michael and Greg; I'm also going through the same sort of decision making. I've owned my 97 s10ev since Jan. 2005 and its been great to me. Of course I've hand to change a few things like coolant pump, brakes, radiator fan buffer and of course the all elusive batteries etc. But now I've come across a problem I can't seem to fix. My little baby is showing a DTC 090 (Reverse Control Circuit Failed Start-Up) code which disables the motor drive. I wonder, has anyone in our group had this problem? Anyway unless I can find a solution I may have to sell or donate my little baby. George Richards

I sold my NiMH S10 years ago and now drive a Leaf.
I miss being able haul wood chips for volunteer gardening purposes! Stephen in Oakland > On Jul 11, 2015, at 6:51 PM, Michael Anzalone <[email removed]> wrote:

Good Morning, It is good to see people are still paying attention to our list (Hi Steve!)! I am afraid that I don't have good news, either. The trucks are non-op (as Jeff Thomas would say). It got to be too difficult to keep them charged with the batteries falling out of balance. I am driving a Leaf for the time being. GM appears to be quite happy letting the trucks and associated charge/control software rot. I have heard about one or two trucks being converted to Li, but then all has gone quiet. Forced rot? So, I am concerned about getting a Volt since GM will not support it either in the future (dig, dig - ;-) ). How are people doing with the Pb batteries? Replacement issues? My early range on Pb was about 40 miles at low speed and I managed about 70 miles with NiMH. Best Regards, Bob --Forwarded Message Attachment--
