[S10-EV] Replacement PIM capacitors

Steve Hawkins Tue, 4 May 2021 15:28:35 +0000 2021 / #12
Hi guys, I have a request. Back around 2005 Jeff Thomas recommended replacement of the PIM caps. in our trucks. Jeff's post, in part, is copied below. Does anyone have a picture of those replacement caps that Jeff used? We are looking for the PNs/spec's and pictures of either the Panasonic (c2005) version, or the Cornell Dubilier (c2008) version. If anyone has one to take a picture of I would appreciate a copy. We are looking to spec. them again and this would be very useful data for our search. The original GM OEM caps were black and manufactured by Marcon - CWP-M, 450VDC 2200/uf, +85 degrees C, 3, 6E07-3A. Feel free to contact me off list at [email removed]<mailto:[email removed]> if you have any data. Much appreciated. Thanks,
Steve === Excerpt from Jeff Thomas' post ... "In October of 2005 I received the first batch of replacement filter
capacitors manufactured by Panasonic. These were special order, an
exact replacement for the Marcon capacitors. I began refitting many
of the S-10EV's with these new capacitors when they would arrive for
service work. I quickly used up all the Panasonic capacitor inventory on hand, and
went to order more. I then discovered Panasonic had discontinued
manufacturing screw top filter capacitors shortly after I placed the
initial order.
In communication with Panasonic, they disclosed the capacitors I
received were actually assembled by Cornell Dubilier for Panasonic,
and marked for Panasonic (evidently this was a common practice). I
placed another volume order of these special package screw top
capacitors with Cornell Dubilier, and received a volume supply in Oct
06 to sustain the entire S-10EV fleet."

[S10-EV] Replacement PIM capacitors

Bryce Nash Tue, 4 May 2021 19:38:41 +0200 2021 / #13
Hi Steve (and friends!), Back in 2015, Jose Movarec posted some information about suitable
replacements that he found. I'll paste his original message below mine.
At that time, I was able to order some from Digikey, and I can confirm that
they're a direct replacement. It looks like they still have them for about
$70 each: https://www.digikey.com/short/d5w025jc As Digikey has ~19 in stock at the moment, I would recommend to order some
of those while the opportunity is available. Have fun! Bryce >From Jose in 2015: If you read carefully the past threads regarding the capacitors, it is
really important to change them to make sure they do not burst like a
grenade and destroy the PIM. I think last capacitors Jeff had, are owned by
Don. I could not buy them from him, so I found a perfect replacement
available in the market. They are exactly the same size, bolt pattern
voltage and capacity. You need 4 of them. You can find them here: http://www.newark.com/nichicon/lnc2w222mseg

do the swap. If you have any questions ask me. Regards Jose Movarec On Tue, May 4, 2021 at 5:28 PM Steve Hawkins <[email removed]>

[S10-EV] Replacement PIM capacitors

Steve Hawkins Tue, 4 May 2021 18:09:06 +0000 2021 / #14
Hi Bryce, Thanks for this response and data. I had not seen Jose?s email previously and will investigate this option. I was hoping that Jeff?s option, due to it being newer than the originals, might have an increased voltage rating for safer and longer operation then the original. Good information here, and greatly appreciated. Thank you,

[S10-EV] Replacement PIM capacitors

Years ago, when I first heard this, I was freaking out over the possibility that my Capacitors would turn my truck into a parts donor. As I scrambled to find the replacements, I was told that it was an issue only on the Nickel Metal Hydride battery trucks and not the Lead-acid packs. I never replaced them. Sold my truck 2 years ago. Kinda miss it now.Kevin McMullinBear, DE?? -----Original Message-----

[S10-EV] Replacement PIM capacitors

Steve Hawkins Tue, 4 May 2021 19:28:18 +0000 2021 / #16
Hi Kevin, et al, If I understand it correctly, non-EE here, it was originally considered mostly an NIMH issue because the higher voltage of the NIMH pack was closer to the max. rating of the caps, 450vdc. However, and I believe this is correct, as the years go by and the caps age their max. voltage tolerance declines putting their margin closer to the lower voltages of the PbA packs, too. So, again, if I get this correct, the risk of failure becomes greater even with the lower voltage PbA packs as time passes. Corrections welcomed. Steve From: [email removed] [mailto:[email removed]]

[S10-EV] Replacement PIM capacitors

Jamovarec Fri, 7 May 2021 23:52:41 -0400 2021 / #17
?
? Hi Steve and everyone! Regarding your question about the Nichicon capacitors I found in 2015, they are identical to the Cornell Dubillier originals, and they have worked fine since I installed them back then. As a precaution they should be changed to avoid failure or explosion, as Jeff told us many times. The replacement is very straightforward and can be done without even taking the PIM out of the truck. Just obviously taking precautions to discharge the capacitors before trying to unscrew them from the rail they are mounted to. In the case of lead acid trucks they also have failed, so they should be replaced on any truck. Regards Jose Movarec -------------- next part --------------
